Drugs Before After Funny Lindsay Lohan After Drugs
American actress and singer Lindsay Lohan has led a high-profile life since her youth as a child model and actor. Following commercial success and critical recognition as a triple threat performer, Lohan secured her status as a teen idol and received intensive attention from the media. After a slew of legal problems and arrests in 2007, Lohan received constant media scrutiny, which had a drastic impact on her career and public image. Her problems with the law continued until 2015, the first time she had been probation-free in over eight years. Alongside her much-publicized legal problems, and struggles with alcoholism and substance abuse, including her multiple court-mandated rehab stints, her turbulent family life and her extensive list of friendships, relationships and romantic associations with other high-profile personalities, have also been highly publicized and documented.
Early life [edit]
Family and childhood [edit]
Lohan was born on July 2, 1986, in the Bronx borough of New York City, and grew up in Merrick and Cold Spring Harbor, New York, on Long Island. She is the eldest child of Dina and Michael Lohan. Her father, a former Wall Street trader, has been in trouble with the law on several occasions, while her mother is a former dancer and singer. Lohan is of Irish and Italian heritage. Her maternal ancestors were "well known Irish Catholic stalwarts" and her great-grandfather, John L. Sullivan, was a co-founder of the Pro-life Party on Long Island.[1]
Lohan's parents married in 1985, separated when she was three, and later reunited. Dina filed for divorce on January 18, 2005.[2] In August 2007, Lohan's parents announced a final divorce settlement had been reached, with the divorce scheduled to be finalized three months later. Dina was granted custody of their two youngest children, Aliana and Dakota.[3] [4] Lohan has three younger siblings, all of whom have been models or actors: Michael Jr., who appeared on the 1998 Nancy Meyers film, The Parent Trap, Aliana "Ali", a model and singer, and Dakota "Cody", a model.
In 1990, Lohan's father was investigated for insider trading and convicted of criminal contempt of court. He was sentenced to three years in prison in Nassau County, New York, and was released in 1993 on five years' probation. During this time, Lohan had started modeling for the Ford Models agency and working as a commercial TV actress,[5] [6] and by the time of his father's release from prison in 1993, Lohan was at the pinnacle of her career. In 1997, her father was arrested when he violated his probation after flying to Napa, California, to visit Lohan, who had been hospitalized for an asthma attack that occurred during the filming of The Parent Trap. He subsequently served a year in prison.
Lohan spoke about her turbulent childhood in 2007: "I feel like a second parent in the sense that I helped raise my family... I was put between my mother and father a lot."[7] [8] Despite the conflicts, Lohan spoke very fondly of her family.[9] [10] However, in 2007, 2008 and 2009, she admitted that she had cut off contact with her father, describing his behavior as unpredictable and hard to deal with.[11] [12] [13] [14]
While filming the 2013 Paul Schrader film, The Canyons, Lohan filmed a scene with co-star James Deen, which depicted Lohan being assaulted by Deen. When later complimented on her acting in the scene, Lohan responded, "I've got a lot of experience with that from my dad."[15]
Teenage years [edit]
After Lohan became a movie star, tensions arose in her family. This conflict came to a head on May 23, 2004, when her father and mother's youngest brother, Matt Sullivan, got into a fistfight outside Lohan's Long Island home, during a First Communion celebration for their son Dakota. Lohan's father was charged with attempted assault and, while awaiting sentencing, was involved in a car accident that led to him being charged with driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.[2] He was later arrested on June 29, 2007, after allegedly leaving a Long Island hotel where he had rented several suites without paying his US$3,800 bill, and faced assault charges in Manhattan for allegedly swearing at a sanitation worker and punching the worker in the face after the worker's truck blocked his car. Lohan's father was released from prison in March 2007 after serving a two-and-a-half-year sentence at the Collins Correctional Facility in Collins, New York.[16]
Lohan said that her first problems arose when she moved to California by herself at age 15. Around 2004 and 2007, she was earning a US$7 million paycheck per picture and was one of the most highest-paid actresses of her generation. During her interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2013, Lohan spoke of her lack of financial guidance and how her early legal problems left her unfazed as she was so deep into her tendencies as an addict.[17] In the same interview, she admitted it took a period of time before she could admit to herself that she had a problem.
Upon moving to Los Angeles, California, Lohan briefly lived with fellow Disney star Raven-Symoné, though she said Lindsay had been at the apartment very little, claiming she had only been there three times.[18] [19] Following the 2004 Mark Waters film, Mean Girls, Lohan spent several years living out of hotels in Los Angeles, of which two years were spent at the Chateau Marmont. In late 2007, after settling down in a more permanent residence, she explained that she "didn't want to be alone," but that "it wasn't a way of life... not very consistent."[20] [21] [22] Lohan had a series of car accidents that were widely reported, in August 2004, October 2005 and November 2006, when she suffered minor injuries because a paparazzi who was following her for a photograph hit her Mercedes-Benz convertible.[23] [24] [25] During her time working in Los Angeles, Lohan, reportedly, had suffered from bulimia.[26] [27] [28]
Personal interests [edit]
Lohan has mentioned her interest in writing an autobiography several times, stating in 2014 that she planned to release one in the near future.[29] Lohan's original reason for writing an autobio was for her to tell her clear truth due to half-truth tabloid articles, and her mother writing a tell-all of her own.
Religion [edit]
Lohan was raised as a Roman Catholic.[30] In April 2016, she was studying Islam and considered converting.[31] [32] Lohan was publicly spotted with a headscarf and holding a Quran, resulting in media coverage questioning her faith.[33] [34] Following an incident in February 2017, when Lohan was asked to take off her headscarf while going through airport security, she publicly claimed to have been "racially profiled."[35] Moreover, Lohan wrote "Salam Aleikum," a religious salutation among Muslims, on her Instagram presentation.[36]
In January 2019, Lohan said in an interview that she meditates three times a day.[37]
Languages [edit]
Lohan claims to be fluent in French and able to understand Russian.[30] In 2016, she said she was studying Italian, Arabic and Turkish.[38]
Residence [edit]
After growing up on Long Island with her family, and her subsequent move by herself to California, Lohan has resided in Dubai since 2016. She has explained her decision by saying: "There's a certain calmness that I find there... There's no paparazzi, no cameras. That's a big deal for me."[39] Lohan briefly returned to New York in 2013 after checking out of rehab, and also lived in London between 2014 and 2016 after she signed on to do a play in the West End production of Speed-the-Plow, and to escape the intense media attention she had been receiving while in the United States.[40] She mentioned at the time: "I can go for a run here [London] on my own. … I do every morning, early, and I think how my friends in New York would still be up partying at that time. I needed to grow up, and London is a better place for me to do that than anywhere else," then she added, "I haven't heard myself mentioned on TV since I have been here. That has been really weird for me, and great."[41]
Wealth [edit]
After earning approximately US$30 million from movie salaries alone, Lohan became famous for leading an extremely expensive and controversial lifestyle. She has faced many legal and personal problems that have eaten up a huge percentage of her fortune. Prior to appearing on the January–February 2012 issue of Playboy magazine, Lohan was reportedly close to bankruptcy. She earned US$1 million to pose nude for the men's magazine. In December 2012, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) seized control of Lohan's bank accounts to pay back the US$233,000 she owed in unpaid federal back taxes. In August 2013, Lohan earned a reported US$2 million for her 2014 OWN docuseries, Lindsay. A large portion of that money was set aside for taxes, rehab fees and IRS debts.
As of May 2022, Lohan's net worth is currently at US$1.5 million, according to CelebrityNetWorth.
Business activities [edit]
In October 2016, Lohan opened her first nightclub in collaboration with Dennis Papageorgiou, named Lohan Nightclub, in Athens, Greece.
In May 2018, Lohan opened her first resort on the Greek island of Mykonos, called Lohan Beach House Mykonos, and later her second resort in Ialisos Beach, Rhodes, called Lohan Beach House Rhodes. As of June 2019, the resort is no longer open in Mykonos.
Political views and activism [edit]
During the 2008 United States presidential election, Lohan offered her services to Barack Obama's Democratic Party, but was declined.[42] In a blog post, Lohan criticized the media and then Republican candidate Sarah Palin for not focusing on policy, and denounced Palin's positions on homosexuality, birth control and abortion.[43] [44] Lohan had previously expressed an interest in going to Iraq, during the Iraq War in 2006, on a USO tour with Hillary Clinton.[45] In the 2012 US presidential election, Lohan supported Republican candidate Mitt Romney, something that prompted ABC News to call her a "political turncoat."[46] [47] Only weeks later, she tweeted words supportive of Obama.[48] Following her criticism of the pressing matters involving Brexit, Lohan had gained support for her political views due to her unexpected attentiveness and passionate beliefs about the matter.[49] [50] [51] [52]
Lohan narrated and presented the British documentary film, Lindsay Lohan's Indian Journey, about human trafficking in India. It was filmed during a week in India in December 2009, and transmitted on BBC Three in April 2010.[53] [54] The British Broadcasting Corporation was criticized for having hired Lohan, and while reviewers called the documentary compelling, they also found Lohan's presence to be odd and distracting.[55] [56] [57] Lohan said: "I hope my presence in India will bring awareness to the really important issues raised in making this film."[58] In October 2016 and January 2017, Lohan traveled to Turkey to visit the Syrian refugee camps, and to meet president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Bana al-Abed, a Syrian refugee girl.[59] [60]
Relationships [edit]
In 2004, Lohan started dating actor Wilmer Valderrama. That same year, she guest-starred in an episode of the TV sitcom, That '70s Show, where Valderrama was a regular. Their relationship garnered some controversy because of the age difference. After their breakup, Lohan wrote her 2004 single, "Over", about the experience. She next had a relationship with Pink Taco founder and Hard Rock Cafe heir Harry Morton, whom she dated between July and September 2006. From May to July 2007, Lohan dated television personality Calum Best, the only child of footballer George Best. While in rehab, Lohan met 25-year-old snowboarder Riley Giles. They soon started dating and the relationship lasted from September to December 2007.
In 2008, Lohan started an on-again, off-again relationship with DJ Samantha Ronson.[61] [62] She co-hosted nightclub events with Ronson and often accompanied her when she was working.[63] [64] In April 2009, following her breakup with Ronson, Lohan appeared on a dating spoof produced by the comedy video website, Funny or Die.[65] It was viewed 2.7 million times in the first week and received favorable comments from media outlets.[66] [67] During her interview with Howard Stern in 2019, Lohan spoke about coming out, recalling people reacting poorly to her being bisexual, she said: "I was the first one who was like, that came out about, really, for my age." In the same interview, Lohan said she and Ronson were now on good terms, explaining that they were always "more friends than anything."
In 2016, Lohan was engaged to London-based Russian millionaire Egor Tarabasov, owner of the real estate agency Home House Estates and son of Dmitry Tarabasov, after they had started dating in the previous year.[68] [69] The engagement came to a rocky end after a video of the couple in a physical altercation at a beach in Mykonos was released to the media.[70] After their split in mid-2017, Lohan publicly accused Tarabasov of abusing her and him accusing Lohan of stealing £24,000 worth of his personal belongings.
Lohan announced on November 28, 2021, her engagement to financier Bader S Shammas, after three years of dating.[71]
Friendships [edit]
Since the early 2000s, Lohan has had a series of love–hate friendships with a few celebrities, dubbed by the media as her "frenemies". The most notable example being her relationship with socialite Paris Hilton. The two often dissed one another in the media but would eventually make amends until 2013, when Hilton's younger brother Barron, accused Lohan of having club owner Ray LeMoine beat him up during the Art Basel festival in Miami Beach, Florida, with Hilton quickly responding in his defense on social media. LeMoine would later clarify and state Lohan had been unconnected to the incident, and no charges were ever filed against him. Upon being asked about the incident on Lindsay, Lohan distanced herself from the situation saying she "did not have any part in it."[72] [73] At the height of Lohan's career, media personality and socialite Kim Kardashian worked for Lohan as her personal shopper and stylist, and they remain good friends to date. Lohan is also close friends with Kardashian's older sister Kourtney, and mother Kris Jenner. Lohan attended Kardashian's wedding in Montecito, California, on August 20, 2011, with her mother Dina, and sister Aliana.
Lohan had a highly publicized feud with fellow Disney star Hilary Duff, after both seemingly dated singer Aaron Carter around the same time. They were often brought up in each other's interviews, and, in 2004, Lohan parodied the feud while hosting Saturday Night Live. By early 2007, the conflict was over as the two were hanging out together, and Lohan supported Duff's album release.[74] [75] In 2013, her Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen co-star Megan Fox mentioned Lohan when she commented on actress Marilyn Monroe, saying: "She [Monroe] wasn't powerful at the time. She was sort of like Lindsay. She was an actress who wasn't reliable, who almost wasn't insurable... She had all the potential in the world and it was squandered."[76] Fox later explained her comments: "I attempted to draw parallels between Lindsay and Marilyn in order to illustrate my point that while Marilyn may be an icon now, sadly she was not respected and taken seriously while she was still living," then she added, "I intended for this to be a factual comparison of two women with similar experiences in Hollywood. Unfortunately it turned into me offering up what is really much more of an uneducated opinion. It was most definitely not my intention to criticize or degrade Lindsay."[77]
Sexuality [edit]
Speaking about her sexual orientation, Lohan said that she was not a lesbian. When asked if she was bisexual in 2008, she responded "Maybe. Yeah," adding, "I don't want to classify myself."[61] However, Lohan said: "I know I'm straight. I have made out with girls before, and I had a relationship with a girl. But I think I needed to experience that and I think I was looking for something different."[78]
Controversies [edit]
During filming of the 2007 Garry Marshall film, Georgia Rule, Lohan was hospitalized, her representative said "she was overheated and dehydrated." The film's production came to media attention when a warning letter from Morgan Creek CEO James G. Robinson to Lohan was leaked online on The Smoking Gun; in it, he criticized her heavy partying and lateness on set, calling her "discourteous, irresponsible and unprofessional", comparing her to a "spoiled child."[79] [80] [81]
After a fight with her mother in 2012, Lohan had called her father in a frantic episode, insisting that her mother was on cocaine like "a crazy person," according to her. Lohan's father evidently recorded the call and released it to the press. The tape subsequently went viral and gained international attention.
In 2014, In Touch magazine published a handwritten list of Lohan's supposed sexual partners, which featured a number of high-profile names including Justin Timberlake, Orlando Bloom, Ashton Kutcher, Ryan Phillippe, Max George, Zac Efron, Joaquin Phoenix, Evan Peters, Colin Farrell, Jamie Dornan, Adam Levine, and the late Heath Ledger. After appearing onWatch What Happens Live, Lohan later confirmed to host Andy Cohen that the list was real, but that she had never intended for it to go public, explaining that she had actually written it as part of her fifth step in AA at Betty Ford.
In October 2017, Lohan received criticism for defending film producer Harvey Weinstein, whom she worked with on several films, on Instagram and saying that his wife Georgina Chapman should stay with him.[82] Weinstein had been accused of sexual harassment and sexual assault. Lohan later clarified stating, "I am saddened to hear about the allegations against my former colleague Harvey Weinstein. As someone who has lived their life in the public eye, I feel that allegations should always be made to the authorities and not played out in the media."[83]
In September 2018, Lohan garnered controversy after she livestreamed herself attempting to lead away a homeless woman's children on Instagram. In the video, she accuses the woman of child trafficking and dubs the family "Syrian refugee[s]." The situation has been regarded as an attempted kidnapping, and suspicions have arisen that Lohan was intoxicated.[84]
Substance abuse [edit]
By December 2006, Lohan started to attend AA meetings and had already developed a reputation as a Hollywood "It Girl". She was often seen attending events and became a notable fixture in the L.A. late-night scene, where alcohol and other drugs were often present and on hand for her.[85] By 2007, her lifestyle had "caught up" with her, she once noted, as she started to received more attention for her late-night persona than for her film work, and faced the beginning of what would be a long series of run-in's with the law.[86] Lohan described herself as an "addict" in her 2013 interview with Oprah Winfrey, stating that alcohol was a gateway drug to other things for her. She also admitted to using cocaine "10 to 15 times," explaining that it "allowed [her] to drink more."[87] [88] [89]
Her January 2007 admittance into a residential treatment center marked the first of six court-mandated rehab stints in a span of six years; she had spent over 250 days in rehab by 2014.[90] In January 2007, Lohan voluntarily checked herself into the Wonderland Center in Los Angeles for a 30-day stay.[91] She continued to work on the Chris Sivertson film, I Know Who Killed Me, returning to the facility at night.[92] In the wake of her second arrest, Lohan entered the Promises Treatment Center in Malibu, California, where she stayed for 45 days.[93] [94] She agreed to wear a SCRAM bracelet after her discharge from Promises. In August 2007, Lohan entered rehab for the third time, checking into Utah's Cirque Lodge Treatment Center for a three-month stay.[95] She checked out of the Cirque Lodge in October.
In July 2010, Lohan was convicted of violating her probation after failing to attend mandatory alcohol education classes. She was sentenced to 90 days in prison and was to complete a 90-day rehab program following her release. She was released from prison on August 2, 2010, after serving only 14 days of her sentence and immediately went to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center for her required rehab.[96] [97] [98] [99] Although Lohan was granted an early release, she was still ordered to complete an outpatient rehab program. Not even a month after she was released from her court-ordered rehab program, Lohan found herself in trouble yet again after failing a mandatory drug test. A Los Angeles judge revoked her probation and Lohan was brought to prison, though she was released on bail. In September 28, 2010, Lohan checked into the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, California, where she remained on court order for three months until early January 2011.[100] [101] [102] [103] [104] In May 3, 2013 Lohan checked again into Betty Ford, but moved to a different facility, Cliffside Malibu, in June, where she remained until her release on July 31 of that same year.[105] [106]
Legal issues [edit]
In Saturday, May 26, 2007, Lohan lost control of her Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG convertible and struck a curb and trees on Sunset Boulevard in Beverly Hills, California. After the accident, a friend of Lohan drove her in another car to Century City Doctors Hospital in Century City, California. By the time police arrived on the scene, Lohan was gone and the smashed car had been moved to a nearby condo complex by an unidentified man. Police arrested Lohan at the hospital for investigation of misdemeanor driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or drugs, but not taken into custody so she could receive treatment for non-life-threatening injuries to her upper chest area.[107] The Beverly Hills Police Department (BHPD) announced at a press conference Saturday afternoon that officers found a "usable amount" of a drug in the actress' 2005 Mercedes SL-65, which crashed on Sunset Boulevard around 5:30 a.m. Lt. Mitch McCann of the Beverly Hills Police said it appeared as if Lohan was speeding when she lost control of the vehicle. He also added the drugs found were "not on (Lohan's) person," but declined to reveal where they had been discovered. Lt. McCann said the case will be presented to prosecutors this week. Lohan is due in court August 24, 2007.
In Tuesday, July 24, 2007, less than two weeks after her release from the Promises Treatment Center, Lohan was arrested in Santa Monica, California, for driving under the influence, felony drug possession, and driving with a suspended license.[108] [109] [110] [111] The arrest stemmed from a car chase Lohan reportedly had with the mother of her personal assistant. In August 23, 2007, Lohan pleaded guilty to misdemeanor cocaine use and driving under the influence on the May and July cases, and was sentenced to 36 months of probation, an 18 month-long alcohol education program, 10 days of community service, court-mandated rehab, and one day in prison. "It is clear to me that my life has become completely unmanageable because I am addicted to alcohol and drugs," Lohan wrote in a statement released to MTV News after the hearing.[112] In November 15, 2007, Lohan entered the Century Regional Detention Facility (a women's prison in Lynwood, California) and served only 84 minutes from the one-day sentence. A sheriff spokesman cited overcrowding and the nonviolent nature of the crime as reasons for the reduced sentence.[113]
In October 16, 2009, Lohan was given another year of probation due to failure to complete the court-ordered alcohol education program.[114] In May 2010, Lohan traveled to the Cannes Film Festival to promote the biopic, Inferno. She was set to star as pornographic actress Linda Lovelace, but was later replaced while in court-ordered rehab.[115] [116] Because she was in France and her passport was reportedly stolen, Lohan missed a hearing in the United States. A bench warrant was issued for her arrest which was rescinded after she posted the US$100,00 bail.[117] [118] A judge ruled that Lohan had violated the terms of her probation by missing a string of alcohol education classes imposed by the court. She was sentenced to 90 days in prison, followed by 90 days of inpatient rehab treatment.[119] [120] However, Lohan served only 14 days of the prison sentence, due to overcrowding.[121] [122] [96] [123] Lohan later said in her 2013 interview with Oprah Winfrey that she had subconsciously wanted to go to jail amidst her struggles with addiction, in hopes of finding a place "to just sit" and "be at peace."[124]
In September 2010, Lohan's probation was revoked following a failed drug test.[125] [126] [127] She spent part of the day in prison before being released on bail.[127] [128] [129] [130] While shopping in Venice, California, Lohan allegedly walked out of a jewelry store wearing a one-of-a-kind necklace worth US$2,500. The store clerk reported the necklace missing to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). In February 2011, Lohan is arraigned and booked on felony grand theft charges, and released on US$40,000 bail. A judge later reduces the charges from felony to misdemeanor.[131] [132] [133] In April 2011, she was sentenced to 480 hours of community service – 360 hours to be served in a women's center and the remainder at the Los Angeles County morgue – and 120 days in prison for misdemeanor theft and probation violation, to which she pleaded no contest.[134] [135] [136] [137] [138] Due to overcrowding, Lohan served the sentence under house arrest, wearing also a SCRAM bracelet for 35 days.[139] [140] [141] During a court appearance on October 19, 2011, Lohan's probation was revoked, bail was set at US$100,000, and she is removed from the courtroom in handcuffs. In November 2011, Lohan was found to have violated the terms of her probation by failing to perform the required community service.[142] [143] She was sentenced to additional community service and 30 days in prison, of which she served less than five hours due to overcrowding.[144] [145] [146] [147] [148]
In Friday, June 8, 2012, while on her way to the Liz & Dick set, Lohan was involved in a car accident on the Pacific Coast Highway in California. She sustained minor injuries and was taken to Santa Monica's UCLA Medical Center, which caused a delay in the film's production.[149] [150] In March 2013, Lohan pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges stemming from the 2012 car accident, and is sentenced to 90 days in a rehab facility, 30 days of community service and 18 months of psychotherapy. Her probation was also extended[151] [152] until May 2015, when a judge ended it after she completed the community service making it the first time in nearly eight years that she was probation-free.[153] [154]
The Bling Ring [edit]
In 2009, Lohan's home was burgled by the Bling Ring, a group of convicted teenage thieves whose ringleader considered Lohan to be their ultimate conquest. Video surveillance of the burglary recorded at Lohan's Hollywood Hills residence played a large role in breaking the case.[155] Even though by August 2009, ringleader Rachel Lee had moved into her father's house in Las Vegas, Nevada, she felt compelled to return to Los Angeles for yet another burglary, the target being Lohan, who was apparently Lee's "ultimate fashion icon" and "biggest conquest." Lee, Nick Prugo and Diana Tamayo, allegedly stole around US$130,000 worth of clothes and jewelry from Lohan's home. According to Prugo, Tamayo and Lee were "freaking out" over Lohan's things. By that time, they were well-publicized criminals at large, and Prugo was especially worried about the burglary, knowing that if they were captured by surveillance cameras stealing from Lohan's residence, the footage would be widely seen.[156] Lohan was briefly incarcerated in a cell next to Alexis Neiers, a member of the Bling Ring.[157]
The case was covered in the 2013 Sofia Coppola film, The Bling Ring. Archive footage in the film featured Lohan during her highly publicized trials. Lohan referenced the Bling Ring in the pilot of Lindsay.[158]
